Sony Reader 350 Pocket

Hello!

Do any of you guys own a Sony pocket 350?

I been looking at ebook readers, since my eyes are not a big fan of me reading too much on the computer. I really like the design of the Sony pocket 350 and I like that it has a touch screen.

I went to my local electronic store recently because I wanted to try it out before buying. Sadly it was behind a 'glass screen' and I could only try and hold it in my hand, not turn it on.

It was much smaller than I thought, but my question is, how is it to read on? is the screen to small or is it like a small paperback? Do you regret buying yours?

I really want it, but I would love to hear from someone who has read fanfic on it before, since thats the only thing I'm going to be reading on it.

Thanks! :)

I don't have a PRS 350, so I can't say anything about the touch screen, but my PRS 300 has a five inch display as well.

My first thought when I unpacked it was "Oh, that's a tiny thing" but actually I love the size. It fits perfectly into one hand without having to change positions constantly.

It's smaller than a small paperback, I would say. I don't even think about the size anymore I just read and read ;). I don't regret buying it, it was a very wise decision.

My SO has a Daily Edition, not a Pocket, though that was his second choice when he was choosing readers. We were able to handle and test out five different readers at Best Buy.

The DE does have a touch screen as well, and it has a larger screen and wi-fi. But as I recall, the Pocket was able to enlarge text to a near similar size, meaning that the screen size was not a problem in reading, and the touch function works very nicely.

He said that if the device is cold (as in a cold environment) the touch function takes a little longer to respond, but otherwise he hasn't had any problems with it, and there are also buttons for some basic functions.

He has loaded his own texts onto it rather than purchased eBooks and recommends bypassing the Sony software and either use Calibre or load stuff directly from one's computer hard-drive.

I have one. I only started reading fic on it recently - using Squee!Book to convert it to EPUB - but I'm very happy with it both in general and for fic purposes. The screen size isn't really an issue, just set the font size you prefer. One of the best touch screens I've tried, too, plus it has a stylus so you can take notes.

I haven't got one (Sony 505 here, which is slightly larger than the Pocket), but I definitely wouldn't want a reader I couldn't use one-handed. (heh.) I doubt the size would be bothersome, and IIRC the 350s have got the newer screens, right? Don't buy a reader that doesn't have one of the new-generation screens unless you have my current budget (i.e., none).

You'll find more info about converting fic into usable formats in previous posts in this comm, and lots of us (demonstrably!) answer questions. :)

I have the 650 so I'm not sure i can give good feedback for the 350 but I will say the touch screen is awesome and if you only plan on reading fan fiction or fiction novels (tons of free ebooks online) then from what I've read at Mobile Read from 350 owners you should be happy with it. I went for the 6 inch screen because I also read manga on my device and 5 inches is just too small for that.

I'm not sure if you carry a purse with you everywhere but the 350 should fit comfortably, I say this because my 650 fits with room to spare in my purse and I don't have a giant purse. :)

p.s.

I highly recommend visiting Mobile Read there are many users there that have a 5 inch screen model of various devices. I think they may also have comparison pictures of the 350 vs the 650 so you can see how the screen sizes match up.

This - I love how small my PRS 300 is. I put manga on there and I can read it on the screen without a problem, so it's perfect for text.

I hope after you've had your device for a while that you'd be willing to write a review here or in your journal so if anyone else has the same question we know where to point them. :) Though if you do write a review in your journal I'd love if you could drop me the link. :)

I'm so glad Mobile Read was able to help you come to a decision.

I used to read everything on a Treo 700 - but browsing just got so so slow....

It has about a 1.5 inch screen. LOL.
