I ended up getting the Jetbook, and while it's not as fancy as my hubby's Kindle, it handles several different file formats (basically, anything *except* Kindle files), including my Barnes & Noble e-books, and it displays pdf files far better than the Kindle. Plus, it was *very cheap*; I got it for $50 on NewEgg...
