Hey, guys. I've successfully used EpubMerge before, but I tried it again today and wasn't too happy with the results. Here were the issues I encountered:

1. Calibre generated its own cover for each of the books in the series. I created a cover for the entire series, but I don't want the individual books to have their own covers. Is there a way to tell Calibre that you only want one cover for the series?

2. There's no table of contents at the beginning, listing each part of the series. Is there any way to add that?

3. In the table of contents at the back of the series, each individual book had two "chapters" listed under it: the author's name, and the author's notes. (Probably relevant: I downloaded the series from Archive of Our Own.) Is there any way to remove that? Obviously I would want the actual chapters, if each individual book was a multi-chapter fic; but since that's not the case, I don't want the author and author's notes to count as chapters.

On a separate note, has anyone ever had trouble with their covers transferring to the Kindle Fire? I use the "Send to Kindle Fire" plug-in thing that Amazon offers, because it sends all my fics to "Docs" instead of "Books" (don't want random people noticing my fanfic, lol). But half the time I use the plug-in, the covers don't transfer and I get a generic white cover with black text.

Any help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated! =)

I have around 4,000 + fanfiction ebooks saved on my computer, and while I already have two ereaders capable of holding all of them, (the Kindle Fire and Nook 1st Gen,) neither of them make it easy to keep track of all of the stories on there. I want to know if there are any ereaders out there that either have a large internal memory, or the option of upgrading storage, and also have the ability to manage a large collection. I'd like to keep the cost at $100 or lower, and I don't mind buying a used ereader. Thanks to anyone who replies.

Ok, bear with me please. I know this information is out there somewhere, it's probably been asked a million times, but please keep in mind, I'm old!!

A couple of times, I've downloaded fanfic and successfully gotten it on my Nook. But, I do a bunch at a time, so it's usually quite a while before I need more. Then of course, I have no idea how I did it. What I want to do is write down the way to download and then keep it on file. That way I always have it and don't have to waste time figuring it out, and just get to reading!!

So please can I have downloading fan fic for dummies? Probably most of what I want to download is archived stories that you just click on and read. How do I get those downloaded? I've used squeebook, I have Calbre and the fanfiction downloader, but like I said, I don't remember what to do.

Thanks!

Lori
And contrary to my name and icon, I don't read a whole lot of SPN fanfic any longer!! Back to good old S&H!

For the past couple of week I have downloaded all of the favorites fics and put them on my Nook.  I have had to use Sigil on about a 1/3 of them to look right.  The ones that I'm having the most trouble with is all of my old X-Files stories that I love from Grossamer.org.  I tired to download them in txt formart but that didn't look right.  Then I tired saved them in HTML formart and just removed the background.  Again it doesn't look right.  A lot of the time the text runs too wide for my screen.  I was wondering if any one else has tired to put their old X-files fanfic on their e-reader and what they did to make it look right.

A few revisions/updates ago Calibre added the ability to tweak epubs. So this means I can explode the epub, edit the css stylesheet/html code and then rebuild the epub. In the past when I had tried to edit epub files I'd have to use Sigil (which I never quite got used to) or I'd unzip the epub and muck about with the contents and then I never could get it to rezip into an epub.

Now I can edit within calibre (using Notepad ++) which is awesome! :)

I created this tutorial for a school project. It's how I create the LRF/Mobi/Epub formatted ebooks for the Ebook Library. The tutorial mostly mentions epub however what works for epub will also work for the other formats. Epub is the format with many weird exceptions and the css has to be more exact.

Hi! I've written a PDF Service to go from the Print menu on the Mac to an ePub file. I'm not sure if this will be helpful to anyone, but I thought I'd share in case it is, or in case anyone can help me make it better.

I think it will only be useful to people who use Calibre and want to read fanfic from webpages in Stanza on an iPhone or iPod Touch. Note that this isn't going to be a professional-looking eBook, but I think it is much easier to read this way than on mobile Safari.

Download 'Save as ePub.dmg'

I'm hoping the community can help me decide something.

I'm giving a lot of thought to discontinuing LRF as a format that the Ebook Library would host. I've been noticing some problems. For example, I found that after the end of italics there's an extra space. (it took me about 2 years to notice this so I'm not sure how important it is?) But it's most noticeable when there is an italicized word followed by a comma. I was getting sentences like "Hello , this is a test."

I must add that this does not happen in RTF, epub, or the mobipocket files.

There are other reasons I've considered discontinuing the format.

Calibre no longer supports LRF so if there are any bugs they won't be fixed. Sony has switched over to epub, LRF is slowly but surely getting phased out.

The other advantage of epub is that all the new ebook devices coming out, including the Ipad, support epub. (now if Kindle would get on board...)

Reasons I have not switched over to epub myself.

A) I like the font and chapter headings better.
B) No side page margins (like what you see with epub on the Sony PRS-300/500/505/600)
C) Almost all my files are LRF switching over would be a pain.
D) I like the full text justification.

I'm not sure what to do?

In the meantime, I've stopped converting any more files until I have a chance to learn more about epub. I've spent some time on that this week and I have fixed the parts that I didn't like. But I'm not sure I"m used to the different default font style.

I've learned a lot since I've started converting and each format has it's own quirks and exceptions and I sometimes feel like my brain is going to explode, though that could be grad school stuff...

I'd love to hear people's opinions. I'm hoping most people following and participating in this community use the Ebook Library and have thoughts and opinions on the files I'm creating and how they work on your devices???

And in happy news, there are now officially over 1000 stories hosted at the Ebook Library. :)

EDIT: I forgot to add that I am in the process of re-editing the HTML source files to switch the order of the italics with punctuation so the extra space isn't as noticeable, but it may take a while even using Notepad++ because I'm spending every weekend at the library doing homework and that leaves a limited amount of time to edit files, or reupload them to calibre to re-convert.

I did find out why it's happening and it's a LRF limitation because Sony didn't create full font support so there are no bold or italic fonts for LRF. Instead it simulates something close enough and that's why it adds the space.

I may be a little bit compulsive but I don't like the idea of anyone's works hosted on the archive not being as correct as possible and it's better to fix it now while there are only about 100 LRF files...

For the last two or three weeks I've been converting many stories already hosted on the Ebook Library into epub/lrf/and mobi formatted stories. For anyone who is interested in checking out what's been recently converted please visit the News Page at the Ebook Library. I'm still working on this and have another batch coming up hopefully by next weekend.

When I last asked for requests as to what to convert next no one responded so I'm picking authors who've been on the site the longest.

Since I learned how to use Macros in Microsoft Word 2007 I've been slowly but surely creating LRF/Mobi/and epub versions of my absolute favorite stories hosted at the Ebook Library as well as most of the stories posted recently. This is the reason for long delays between updates besides the holidays. My current project is converting all the Top Ten most read fics at the archive, however that will not take long since many already have all four ebook formats.

My question/challenge to the community is does anyone have any specific conversion requests for stories already listed on the archive that are currently only in RTF format?

For anyone that adds a request I'll honor it if you leave feedback/review at the author's post at the Ebook Library. :)

Leave a link here leading to your review of the story and I'll get it converted in the order in which it was requested. :)

This is an excerpt from my post I wrote to introduce a webservice I've written which downloads fanfiction from different websites and stores it online in HTML or ePub format. I hope you will find it useful; on the other hand, if you find it buggy, please contact me and I'll fix it asap.

Some of us love fanfiction. Again, some of us don’t — so if you happen to be one of those, you probably won’t find this post of any interest to you. On the other hand, if you are interested — read on.

Today, will all these fancy ebook reading devices it’s really hard to keep yourself sticked to your monitor and reading from the websites such as fictionpress.com, fanfiction.net and so on. I felt that it is rather annoying too, so that’s why I’ve developed a fanficdownloader — a library, which helps to download fanfiction stories from multiple websites (list includes fictionpress.com, fanfiction.net, fanfictionauthors.net and others). Well, it was cool and all that stuff, but people didn’t like it (which is by no means surprising as end-users tend to like GUI applications rather than Python libraries with a clumsy CLI interface). So I went a step further…

… and developed fanfictionloader. Shortly, this is a web service, which does two things:

  1. Allows to download stories from all these different websites and convert them to industry-standard ePub or good old HTML using a very simple web interface
  2. Stores these stories for you (and you only) so you can always download them later.

What format do you guys prefer???

So far I've been posting RTF, LRF, Epub, and Mobi...

Or does the answer to this question depend on the device you use to read fan fiction hosted at the Ebook Library?

I would have created a poll but don't have that capability on LJ.
