"I somehow missed that this was happening a few months back, so maybe other people did, too.

My Kindle for PC updated itself silently to version 1.19, which is compatible with Amazon's latest formatting. This is great for being able to use the new formatting! This is not so great if you use Calibre to manage your library. Calibre can't read or even recognize the new format, so can't import your books.

If you use Calibre, the easiest thing to do is to uninstall Kindle 1.19 and reinstall the older version, 1.17, and make sure that the "automatically update" box is unchecked.

The Mobileread forum has a thread on how to do this, including direct links to safe downloads of v 1.17 on Amazon. It also has instructions for other methods, if you don't want to downgrade your Kindle for PC/Mac."

Hi all.
I've been using Calibre for about 2 years now and have had little to no problems until now. I'm unsure if my problem is related to Calibre or to an AO3 update and to be truthful, it's a relatively minor functional issue, but is hugely irritating in practice.

Here it is: For the past 3 or 4 days, when I update a fic, any fic or anthology/series from AO3, Calibre replaces [author name] with [Anonymous]. I update at least 10 WIPs daily, so this is quickly becoming a peeve.

Does anyone know if I've mistakenly changed some Preference tab business that I'm unaware of?

Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks much in advance,
Holdt

Hey, guys. I've successfully used EpubMerge before, but I tried it again today and wasn't too happy with the results. Here were the issues I encountered:

1. Calibre generated its own cover for each of the books in the series. I created a cover for the entire series, but I don't want the individual books to have their own covers. Is there a way to tell Calibre that you only want one cover for the series?

2. There's no table of contents at the beginning, listing each part of the series. Is there any way to add that?

3. In the table of contents at the back of the series, each individual book had two "chapters" listed under it: the author's name, and the author's notes. (Probably relevant: I downloaded the series from Archive of Our Own.) Is there any way to remove that? Obviously I would want the actual chapters, if each individual book was a multi-chapter fic; but since that's not the case, I don't want the author and author's notes to count as chapters.

On a separate note, has anyone ever had trouble with their covers transferring to the Kindle Fire? I use the "Send to Kindle Fire" plug-in thing that Amazon offers, because it sends all my fics to "Docs" instead of "Books" (don't want random people noticing my fanfic, lol). But half the time I use the plug-in, the covers don't transfer and I get a generic white cover with black text.

Any help with any of these issues would be greatly appreciated! =)

Covers for Fanfiction Lovers I'm sort of hoping someone who is into Avengers and Teen Wolf participate in the thread and share their covers.

In the meantime, this post is most helpful for White Collar and Supernatural fans. :)

Last week, I used the FanFictionDL plugin in Calibre to create an anthology epub of a series on AO3. Everything went fine. This week, the author added a new story to that series. I was able to use FanFictionDL to update the anthology epub, but I can't get the Count Pages plugin to update the new page total. I get an error message that says "Book already has all statistics and overwrite is turned off." I've been through all the settings in FanFictionDL, Count Pages, EpubMerge, and Calibre itself, but I can't figure out where it thinks I'm telling it not to overwrite the page count. Any of you Calibre power users know what I'm doing wrong?

Hi!

I want to buy a new ereader for Christmas: my Cybook Orizon is a nightmare when you need to manage hundreds of files.
I have set my eyes on the Sony PRS T2 because I've seen in a lot of comments that Sony ereaders are great with Calibre collections and I need to use them to navigate amidst so many files (I have 1500 epubs in my library, and I'd like to have them all on my ereader). I have only one doubt: all the comments I have read are about the older Sony ereaders (PRS 550 or 650), not about the new ones like the PRS T2, that has a different software, based on Android (like the T1). So I am wondering: do you know if the T2 is as good with Calibre collections as its older brothers? And: is it fast at opening/finding a file when you have hundreds of them?
Oh, and another thing: is it possible for the T2 to see folders created by the owner, like a USB storage?

Thanks in advance!

I've seen more requests on how to use Calibre plugins to download fic from archives into Calibre and how to merge series into a single file. This tutorial will first cover how to install plugins. As well as how to use the plugin Fanfiction Downloader to download fic from archives into Calibre and then the use of the plugin Epubmerge to merge series into a single file.

Apologies if this is well known, (if so, why did no one tell me?!?) but I had to drop in and squee.

I use my Sony T1 mostly for fanfic and I have been using the FanfictionDownloader plugin with glee since I first found out about it on this comm. I had avoided plugins before that, but no longer!

If, like me, you have hundreds of fanfics in your library, you might despair of keeping series together without having 100+ pages to search through or 100+ category and series tags. My workaround was to copy-paste all the fics in a series into one Word doc with H1/H2/H3 styles per story/chapter then load into calibre and convert. That way, I load only 1 ebook instead of however many in the series; I also compile favorite author's works, as a hedge just in case someone I will miss deletes their work. (Note: the DOCX calibre plugin is also brilliant because I always forget to save in RTF and now I don't have to care at all.)

Then this morning, I discovered the Epub Merge plugin. BLISS.

Now, I can use FFdownloader to grab ALL the files in a set (author/series/theme/etc), then select relevant files in my calibre library and use Epub Merge to compile. Epub Merge lets you sort the files and update the metadata before running the merge, and in a few clicks I have condensed 4 multi-chapter fics into a single ebook with sections and chapters. Better yet, the original epubs are not destroyed so you have options.

For those with super large libraries, I have noticed a performance improvement for large files vs large numbers of files, which makes sense when you think about it. Instead of indexing 33 epubs in a series (each between 500 and 6000 words), my T1 just has to index 1 ebook with 100K words. That's 32 fewer files for the ereader to index, and when I open it the TOC has the individual stories/chapters properly linked so you can hop to your favorite part.

Even better, if you ALREADY have the single epubs loaded, it won't take more than a moment to convert a set into a single ebook.

I love calibre, and the wonderful community around it. (Next up: learning to use Kindle Collections and see if I can't push them to my Fire too ;)

I'm back with another question.

Originally, I had calibre installed on my desktop computer, but for some reason, it was very resource intensive, and it made my fan go nuts every time I started it. So, I uninstalled it from my desktop and installed it on my netbook. I haven't had any problems with it since, and have been working on getting the settings tweaked according to my needs.

The only thing that's problematic is the small screen size of my netbook, and I'd like to try installing calibre on my desktop again. I'd like to keep the settings I made. Is that possible, or will I have to copy and paste every change I made to the preferences, and recreate custom columns for the desktop installation?

Thank you in advance!

Hi all,

the latest calibre version enabled me to connect my Android device and have it be recognized even though it acts as an MTP device. It involved downloading some drivers, but it's all set up now. I am now trying to work out how exactly I need to set up the Send to device tab to save fic titles into folders on my device the way I want them too.

My eBooks folder on my internal memory has a couple of subfolders: sdcard > eBooks > Fiction and sdcard > eBooks > Nonfiction. Inside the fiction folder I have a Fanfic folder, then several fandom folders: Avengers, Thor, Iron Man etc., then authors inside those folders. The way calibre works now is that it sends the fics to sdcard > eBooks. Is there a way for me to move specific fics to the appropriate fandom and author folders, or should I think about trying to simplify my device folder structure (perhaps having Fiction, Fanfiction, and Nonfiction inside the eBooks folder)?

I would appreciate screenshots and explanations pointing to the exact locations of the settings I need to change, and the templates I need to use to get the naming I want (Author Name - Series # - Fic title) for Send to device, because I already have one that gives me the above when adding books to calibre.

(Apologies for the wall of text!)

ETA and can the tag "device: android" be added to the comm? Thanks!

ETA2 So I spent the whole day trying to find the correct settings to change and the right expressions to use and then testing the whole thing, and I believe I have the answer I was looking for.

In Preferences > Import/Export > Sending books to devices, in the Save template, add the expression

{#category}/{#fandom}/{authors} - {series:||} {series_index:0>2s|| - }{title}

This saves the fics to sdcard/Books on my device, in folders Fanfiction/Fandom. I eliminated the Fiction/Fanfic/Fandom division to simplify the structure. #category corresponds to the Category custom column, where fics are given the Fanfiction category. The #fandom custom column should be self-explanatory.

You also have to make sure that the same expression is added to Preferences > Advanced > Plugins > Device interface plugin > Android driver and MTP Device Interface as well. I had only added it to the Android driver, which didn't work until I did the same for MTP DI. For those who have Asus EEE devices, it wouldn't hurt to add the same expression there (this is all provided you want to use the above folder structure, of course!)

I've found this community incredibly helpful. I've been using Calibre for a while and with the FanFictionDownload plug-in it's really become an incredible tool for downloading and organizing fanfic. Love it. I read fic on Kindle 2 (my favorite Kindle of them all), Nook SimpleTouch Glow, and iPad as well as sometimes in Firefox on my laptop. I try to have both ePub and mobi files for all the fic.

While I know a lot, there are some things I haven't delved into much yet. I haven't generated covers for most fic, though the more I think about it the more I think having covers that indicate pairings with a graphic or text would be handy. Or just covers with some basic text on the front with the sort of data one needs to decide whether the fic is the one you're looking for.

I also haven't done much with style sheets. I create custom columns, but mostly just the ones that the Fanfic Downloader plug-in will populate. Plus Kindle Collection related ones. I'm sure there are some useful ones I haven't thought of yet, that would be helpful with organizing fanfic libraries.

I also want to automate the cleaning up of categories (so I don't have categories for Harry Potter, Harry Potter - J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter - Fandom and instead just have "Harry Potter") and possibly also of character names (some sites/authors use "Harry Potter" and others "Harry P." and it drives me nuts. Also standardizing pairings would be helpful so there aren't two different listings for say Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy and Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter). I know there are ways to do these things (other than using the Manage tools for categories) and I putter around trying to figure things out.

I figure lots of us are puttering around with the same sorts of problems or ideas. Figuring out how best to organize fanfic in Calibre. So maybe if we pool resources/templates/ideas, it will move things along quicker. If folks are willing to share. And I'm sure there are some people out there who are totally new to this or to Calibre that don't know all the nifty things it's capable of and would love to learn. (Heck, I've been using it for well over a year and I don't fully understand all the things it can do!)

So. Other people out there using Calibre: do you have any templates for covers you'd be willing to share? Any custom style sheets you use? Any plug-boards or custom columns you think rock? Are there things you always do to set up fanfic libraries in Calibre? (And do you use multiple libraries or keep all fic in one big one?)

I'm really curious about how people are using Calibre and publishing catalogs and so on and it'd be fun to share tips along those lines. I'll try to post a comment here soon with a list of the plug-ins I use and custom columns and any other fanfic-related tweaks I make to Calibre.

I have a kindle touch and I am trying to figure out an easy way to get LJ Multichapter fics into one epub/mobi file. I already use the epub conversion website so that I can easily get all the chapters into epub - but I can't find a way to actually combine them into one epub file.

I have tried Sigil and I can't figure out how to make it do this even reading the FAQ it just keeps saving one chapter at a time, even when I try to copy and paste multiple chapters from the files.

Does anyone have a good way to do this or am I stuck either doing large amounts of c&p or just naming a ton of epubs as Series: # - Title/Chapter... or using Instapaper to capture them all if they are unlocked and not age protected and get them that way which is messy but does work too.

Also while I'm asking - does anyone know if they managed to figure out how to create collections on the Kindle Touch since it's programmed different than the older Kindles?? I had been following that on the mobile reads forum but it's pretty technical discussion :/

Thanks in advance! :)

For those that would like to convert straight from RTF to LRF here is what I found.

Starting off I make sure my RTF copy of the story has all the paragraphs indented and no extra line space between paragraphs. (Last time I tried with the extra line space back in version 4.2. Calibre did not remove the extra line space from the RTF like it will from HTML files. If it has changed please let me know.)

In your word processor program use the styles to turn your chapter headings into Heading 1 or Heading 2 (I use Heading 2) These will turn into your table of contents in LRF.

Set the font size to 12 or whichever font size you prefer.

At this point you can save and upload to Calibre.

Downsides, if you have image files within the RTF document they will not display on the LRF version.

Upsides: For stories that don't have images this is a rather quick way to create your table of contents and get your story converted into LRF.

First one of the big changes from 5.13 Calibre to 6.11 Calibre is that I don't need separate settings for converting my html files to LRF, Epub, or Mobi. I use one html page to make all 3 file types. I kept the default conversion settings in Calibre for LRF, epub, and mobi.

I've started to use < h2 > tags for all my chapters within the HTML document I plan on using to convert to LRF. Here is an example. (I've added spaces to the tags so they'll be visible.)

< h2 >American Myth< /h2 > or < h2 >Chapter One< /h2 >

These are the settings I'm using in order to center my chapters and add a page break at each chapter. You don't have to use the css override if you don't want to but I find it helps the ebook look nicer.
LRF css settings )
The next step is to change the chapter detection settings.
Chapter Detection Settings )
This setting works best for chapters that aren't labeled Chapter One or Book One. If you have chapters that are like Monday, The Last Stand, and etc...you're good to go with the first setting.

If all your chapters start with Chapter or Book you'll need to use this setting instead.
Alternate Chapter Detection Settings )
The only change is at Detect chapter at tag: Instead of h2,none, you need to use $,,$

If you don't make that change in the Sony PRS Table of Contents you'll get

Chapter One
Chapter One
Chapter Two
Chapter Two

One thing to keep in mind this method only adds the chapters to the Table of Contents on the Sony PRS. The table of contents won't show on the actual story. However, I find going to the Table of Contents rather easy and it's much easier to jump to later chapters using this method. If you do open the LRF in Sony Library you can view your Table of Contents there before adding the story to your device. this is what I'm doing to double check my work.
