Hi guys. I'm having a heck of a problem with this pdf file of all of a certain author's work (she deleted her stuff off lj so all I have is a pdf). I want to make a table of contents for it and convert it to an epub for easier navigation on my Nook.

How should I go about this? I tried adding a table of contents to the pdf and converting to epub using Calibre, but the epub's TOC doesn't work.

ETA: Alternatively, it would be cool if I could chop the pdf up. These are really long fics! Thanks for any advice.

No idea, but I have a feeling that I have the same pdf and I would also love to know how to do this! It's a pain having to guess what pages certain fics start on.

Yay!! Thank you so much! I just finished Demon's Covenant last night and am having an urge to reread some of her Harry Potter stuff. This will be very helpful!

I wonder, if you convert the PDF to ePub, then ePub to RTF/TXT, would that allow you to reedit the whole thing?

Other ideas:
- Open the PDF, "Print" to PDF (CutePDF is freeware) with specific page numbers. This will create a new PDF file on your computer with only the pages you want.
- find a PDF editor to cut up/convert the pages. I think Adobe Acrobat Pro *koff, koff* can export as an editable file.

I know with Acrobat Pro you can use the 'create' button to split a pdf off into new files made up of specified pages of the original. You click 'create', then choose 'merge files into single pdf'. That brings up a box where you choose which file(s) to draw from, and can choose pages within that file.

You can create an epub in Calibre, then use Sigil (http://code.google.com/p/sigil/) to create a TOC. Just highlight each story title and choose 'heading 1' from the heading menu in Sigil. As long as you save the fic in the same place Calibre saved it, you won't have to reconvert or re-upload or anything.

Sigil is fairly buggy because it's still in development, but I've found it very handy for quickly fixing formatting that went wonky during conversion to epub and for adding a TOC when Calibre didn't.

You wouldn't by any chance be willing to share??? my email is amalthia at gmail.com.

I haven't had the chance or time to really convert Maya's complete collection.

Email me at amalthia at gmail.com and I'll send you the epub I fixed up. (it's not perfect but 99.9% better than the PDF)

I just sent you an email, and I didn't want to be so much of a creeper so I'm posting this now, after the fact hoping you don't mind. Can I have the epub too, please?

I use a combination of calibre (to convert) and Sigil (to format) epubs.

Like [livejournal.com profile] the_other_sandy said, it's buggy, but it works (and it's free!). It also has an option to split up the file into chapters since you said you want to chop it up. Be careful when doing that - the undo button doesn't work on chapter splits so you have to know exactly where you want to put them. It's a real hassle to try and splice back together what you didn't want separated.

Yeah, it woudln't have been so bad if Maya had added bookmarks to her PDF before she sailed off into the sunset...

Yeah, it looks like she just tossed it all together. It wouldn't have been so bad if she'd shared it as a Word Doc because then people could fix her shoddy formatting. But many authors are attached PDF because they think people can't work around it...Obviously that is not the case! :) It's just a pain in the ass.

I chopped it into separate PDFs. Haven't gotten around to converting it to other formats because the original was made in something that converts badly to Word (inconsistent paragraph breaks, problems with italics), but I do have all the stories as standalone PDFs. (With metadata, so they should convert nicely.)

Thank you for perhaps the most level headed thing I have read today. I was searching for a service to merge PDF files and found a great service. Merging files is super easy with AltoMerge. Try it on your own here www.altomerge.com (http://www.altomerge.com/) and you'll make sure how it's simple.
